Figure Painting at 12th and S Studio

I attended my first life painting class in Sacramento in Studio 12th and S Street. There are actually two studios there – Michael Mikolon and Patris. Both I met at the Pence Garden Tour and I admired both of their works. I chose to go to Michael because  he’s more into figures and portraits.

My first lesson with him is how to start off the portrait. First, do a pencil sketch – value study. Then make mud. Using all the colors that I had, Michael combine all the colors on my palette to create dark mud and lighter mud to establish value. Color harmony is created from the all the colors in the mud. I had started with splashes of this color and that.

Another point is to determine what is my focal point. Naturally, I said, the eyes. But he pointed out that it could be the area around the nose or the hair. It all depends on the edge – hard vs. soft and the amount of detail shown.

I’m looking forward to going to more life painting sessions. Only $10 for drop in or $25 for instruction can’t be beat!
