More People Sketching

My weekend was busy with people sketching. This time I went to the Square Tomato Arts and Crafts Fair this past weekend. Sketched vendors, shoppers, musicians…tried to get a couple of volunteers to pose for me but no go.

Urbansketching in Davis and Woodland

I had been more into sketching buildings lately especially after taking the Sketchbook Skool course on Urbansketching.

In Davis, I was drawn to these very old apartments that I’ve seen for over 30 years. Located next to them was a sandwich shop that I took my then very young sons after a play at the park. What struck me about these apartments was the entry facade, not often seen in modern day buildings.

Nearby to the apartments are these very new townhomes. Colors and brickworks are what makes these modern day places unique.

A month later I ate at one of my favorite places in Woodland, California. A hole in a wall place that served Italian and Scandinavian cuisune. They are known for their outdoor oven.

Sketching at the Manetti Shrem Museum

“Let’s Draw Davis” sketchcrawl met at the Manetti Shrem Museum in Davis, CA. Beautiful day but a bit nippy. The Wayne Thiebaud Exhibit is on display now so I head on inside to view. I captured some of the sketchers and the iconic horse sculpture inside the museum.

Sketching at the Davis Farmers’ Market

Sketching at the local farmers’ market is drawing subject overload. A sketcher’s dream. So our local sketch group, Let’s Draw Davis, met there headed up by Pete Scully, a locally and maybe internationally known urbansketcher. (He also had published sketching books in which some of my sketches are in.)

I’ve been trying to get more quick sketch people in.  I love sketching people performing, all dressed up or just behaving in a normal fashion. The arm of the band singer and the head of the nursing mother is a bit off but quick sketching is about capturing the gesture – no concern about getting the proportions right.

Check out my Flickr page for more sketches. Enjoy!

Let’s Draw Davis Sketchcrawl

The sketching group that I meet every month met today in the over 100 degree F heat to sketch Davis. The goal was to sketch the hidden spots that are so common in downtown Davis, small boutique shops and unique restaurants. I managed to sketch an antique store front but sketching the sketchers inspired me more.

Trees Sketches

The weather had been beautiful, people were out in the parks, and fortunately I had my pocket size Moleskine sketchbook.

I tried to achieve very minimal in these sketches. Just the shadow details and a touch of colors. Maybe too much color. But I enjoyed not being stressed out about putting in color.

Check out my Flickr page for more pen and ink sketches.

It was a beautiful Sunday morning . . .

and I went on a solo sketchcrawl. I had participated in the Davis sketchcrawl, “Let’s Draw Davis” which is part of a worldwide movement of sketchers, “Urban Sketchers“.

It was a great way to getaway and meet up with a friend just to talk.

I discovered this little sketchbook made by Holbein. It handles watercolor well and is not very thick so I can carry it in my bag. Plus it’s spiralbound.
